One of the reasons I originally was so excited to find the Bar Method, was my growing concern that the older I got, the less strength and flexibility I had. I could only envision that commercial on TV where the lady is on the floor yelling “Help I’ve fallen and I can’t get up”. My worry was that lady was going to be me if I didn’t get serious about focusing on this. That and the fact that I was going to figure out a way that I could pull myself up into our little fishing boat without help from my husband!
I started Bar Method in Nov, 2009 and quickly became addicted. The workout is absolutely hard, challenging, and so much fun. When I heard about the fitness challenge, I was in. I needed to challenge myself, and by committing publically to this, I thought for sure I would make progress on my goal to build strength and flexibility.
So, on that cold and rainy early January Saturday morning, I slipped into that tank and then had my measurements taken. Now I knew where I stood and Bev assisted with setting my goals. In a nutshell my goal was to reduce my body fat by 2% points and loose inches!
I made myself a promise that I needed to attend class at least 4 times/week and 5 if possible. Because of my schedule, I attend the 6 am class and I have been amazed at how many dedicated people show up 3 times/week at that early hour. For most of this time, it has been dark, rainy, and cold, but so worth the effort!
Over these past months, I can tell that I’ve grown stronger and more flexible. While the exercises are still really hard (think thigh), I can tell that I am getting stronger. I can actually lift my legs now on a few of the repetitions for flat back!
Last Saturday, I slipped into the tank again and had my final measurements taken. Good news or not so good news first – I’ll go with the not so good first – I only reduced my fat % by .3% - not the 2% I was hoping for and a big loss of 3 pounds - more on that in a minute. Now the good news…. I hit all my goals except one on my measurements! I lost 1 inch on my bust and waist and 2 inches on both my hips and thighs! Then there is the stuff you can’t measure, like how much stronger I feel and how at work when it gets stressful, I can say to myself, this isn’t near as tough as Bar Method and I make it through that class! Those things are priceless!
Now back to the fat%. This is the eating part. It is really true that eating and exercise go hand and hand. While I’ve always tried to be a healthy eater, this is an area I can now focus on even more. So my next challenge (along with keeping up with the Bar Method) will be to make sure I am aware of what I’m eating. Making sure that the kinds of foods and amounts represent a healthy lifestyle that match my commitment to Bar Method!
